Why Does Branding Matter

Why Does Branding MatterDo brands matter to you? This may be something you have never considered before but branding really does matter. There are some people that prefer brands over anything else and others could care less about brands. However, the bottom line is that branding helps you or your company to get noticed in a rough economy. If you are not branded, then your products disappear into a black hole with every other product like it.

First Impressions

Branding is very similar to a first impression. What kind of brand are you trying to represent in your marketing endeavors? To understand why branding matters, you must first understand what branding is. “A brand is a name or symbol that is commonly known to identify a company or its products and separate them from the competition”. So, in essence a brand is the reputation of your company and what your customers know your business by. If you are a consumer, then you are well aware of the most popular brands out there.

When you go to the grocery store, sometimes you might opt to buy the “non-brand.” Sometimes a non-brand is recognized as being cheaper and not that great of quality. How do you want your brand to be recognized? A store brand can sometimes have a positive branding name as long as it meets the qualifications of the consumer. A brand is not only about its name but also the product it delivers. You may recognize NIKE as an iconic brand around the world. You would probably recognize the symbol of NIKE, even if the name wasn’t there to represent it.

Changing Brands

As a consumer, it may be fairly easy to change brands. However, when you are the company it is not easy to change brands. Once you brand your company a certain way, it is very hard to change. Branding is important so that your customers know who you are and how to recognize you. If you are constantly changing the image and perception of your company, then you are going to lose customers. Customers are building a relationship with the brand they trust, if you keep changing and then you are going to lose customers.

Branding helps the customer recognize you from miles away. Imagine meeting with each every one of your customers and having to explain who and what you are. Branding helps do this for you and it is wonderful for the consumer and company.

Getting a Brand

If you are a company that has been around for a longtime, then you probably already have a brand. However, more and more companies are trying to take the easy way out and skip the branding part. You should know that if you are going to own a business, then you should have a brand.

You can work with a marketing business to help brand your company. Target your audience and expose products they will love. Branding will almost come naturally if you have a product that customers love. However, stick with one brand for your company and do not try to divert. Unless your brand is totally awful, once you get a brand you should try and stick with it. Consumers do not like companies that stand on the fence and are not sure about their own company.

Branding is Important

The bottom line is that branding does matter. It matters to the consumer and to the company because it helps establish a partnership. Customers know what you are about and a company can build a reputation. Whenever a consumer sees your logo, they will recognize the brand and be more prone to buying it. The more a consumer knows about your company, then the better your business will be. Branding is more than a brand because it is the way the consumers view your products all together.

Many times the perceptions of a brand have been cultivated over years of “hand-me-down” advice from parents or other relatives and then a consumer by not want to try a product, even a reformulated, new and improved one, for fear of duplicating their parent’s bad experience.  This is where brand strategy would kick in and help dispel any misconceptions.
